This no cost general public festival presents a preview of new plays in improvement with the initial cohort of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Shade) playwrights in The Ford’s Theatre Legacy Commissions initiative. These commissions find to broaden the American theatre canon by fostering and creating playwrights, incubating stories about social justice and racial heritage, and discovering the diversified activities of underrepresented characters and lesser-recognized historical figures and their contributions to American lifestyle. Pearl Cleage is a playwright, novelist, poet and political activist. Her piece, working title Something Relocating: A Meditation on Maynard, explores the lifestyle and legacy of Maynard Jackson, the initially Black Mayor of Atlanta.
Dominic Taylor is a scholar of African-American theatre and a author-director whose operate has been seen throughout the nation. His piece, functioning title Mobile Surface, facilities all over the life of Ernest Everett Just, the first Black graduate of Dartmouth and author of the eponymous textbook Biology of the Cell Surface area (1939), and his romantic relationship with Roger Arliner Young, a girl scientist who was his assistant and collaborator.
