Across his artistic practice, ektor garcia (b. 1985, Crimson Bluff, California) troubles the hierarchies of gendered and racialized labor, combining a queer punk sensibility with the handcraft traditions of Mexico, his ancestral homeland.
For his exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery, garcia worked with faculty, staff members, and students at the University of Washington’s Ceramic and Metal Arts Building to develop a sequence of new linked-chain sculptures created in ceramic, copper, and glass. Comprised of particular person, interlocking hyperlinks, these chains will kind a collection of mutual and contingent interactions across their constitutive sections as they suspend and drape in the course of the double-peak volume of the gallery. Integrated among the the connected-chain sculptures, garcia will set up a collection of objects from his Mexico Town studio, together with butterflies created of crocheted copper wire that escape the confines of the gallery and inhabit interstitial areas of the museum.
