Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s creation of Giselle is a thrilling blend of dancing and acting. After a difficult pandemic-stuffed 12 months that pressured the enterprise to obtain choice stages, it is a joy to have them return home to Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts to kick off the 2021–22 season, their 43rd. Massey also does effectively solo, twirling and leaping with terrific energy. At the ballet’s close, he kneels by yourself, the unhappiness crystal clear on his confront.

Mark McCormack gives wonderful drama to Hilarion, Albrecht’s rival for Giselle’s really like. He steps in amongst the enthusiasts, breaking them apart and exhibiting Albrecht’s sword to the peasants. Lindsey Bell provides a commanding presence to Myrtha, queen of the Wilis as she glides close to the phase, directing the spirits of betrayed women to seek revenge. The Wilis (Caroline Anderson, Destiny Billot, Victoria Siracusa, Olivia Fohsz, Madison Sweeney, Clara Molina, Hannah Hanson, Mia Koshansky, Amanda Cobb, Rowan Treece, Brenna Mazzara, Cassandra Hope, Meredith Hardin, Carrie Cornelius, Victoria Walpole, Marjorie O’Hearne, Celia Merritt, and Catherine Welch ) provide a fierce anger and passion that is terrifying as they drive the gentlemen who wronged them to madly dance.

The established structure, by Aaron Bauer and Manassas Ballet Theatre, can help set the mood, with two small cottages on both side of the phase in Act 1 and a backdrop of lakes and green hills. Chairs, a desk, and a bench are pulled onstage when important. In Act 2, a large headstone in the remaining-hand corner attracts the eye, with a darkish backdrop of woods and a total moon. Fog rolling on to the stage completes the spooky atmosphere.

Lighting Designer Stacie Johnson-Leske can help add to the modifying temper in each individual act: Act 1 is crammed with sunny light, while the stage is darker and dimmer for Act 2. Costume Designers Karissa Kralik, Karen Kralik, and Caroline Anderson have made outfits to healthy each and every character’s persona. Giselle starts in a white skirt and green top, as do her close friends, and finishes in a white dress. Albrecht begins with a green cloak and a brown vest, ending in a black shirt with white collar. Berthe wears a lengthy white dress and eco-friendly corset, even though Myrtha has a white costume and gold tiara.
