What an excellent feeling to see stay theater once more at Montgomery Faculty Summer time Dinner Theatre. My final time there was in 2019. As Creative Director Lisa Service Baker stated within the playbill, “Elated doesn’t start to explain how we really feel to be again within the Theatre Arts Enviornment, with you, after a three-year hiatus.” This was my first time seeing the very shifting and essential musical Falsettos. I used to be not upset by Kurt Boehm’s great route or Nathan Beary Blustein’s clean and well-executed musical route. Falsettos was written by William Finn and James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Finn. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1992 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, profitable for Greatest Guide and Greatest Unique Rating.
The solid is small however gifted and mighty. Falsettos takes place in New York Metropolis in 1979. It tells the story of Marvin, performed by the gifted Ben Clark, who leaves his spouse, Trina, brilliantly performed by Emma Hanks. Darien Chan performed their ten-year-old son Jason. The younger actor carried out as if he had been appearing for years.
Marvin leaves Trina for his homosexual lover, Whizzer, sensitively performed by Jimmy Bartlebaugh. This creates a ripple impact of guilt, anger, unhappiness, and betrayal. Marvin and his household are Jewish, and he’s very pleased with his heritage and his household, as we hear within the music “A Tight-Knit Household.” The primary act facilities round how this motion impacts him and his household. His spouse seeks out remedy with a psychiatrist, Mendel, well-acted by Sam Intrater. Mendel is immediately drawn to Trina as she grapples with the tip of her marriage to Marvin within the music “Love Is Blind.”
Marvin and Whizzer have their very own points to work by means of, one being Marvin’s need for monogamy with Whizzer within the music “The Thrill of First Love.” Jason worries about his future within the hilarious quantity “My Father’s a Homo,” and all concerned urge Jason to see a psychiatrist (“Everybody Tells Jason to See a Psychiatrist”). Trina worries about her function within the household being changed by Whizzer and he or she belts out a powerful, emotional, and entertaining rendition of “I’m Breaking Down.” There are lots of great musical numbers that spherical out Act One, most notably “March of the Falsettos,” superbly harmonized by Intrater, Clark, Chan, and Bartlebaugh.
Act Two fast-forwards to 1981, the start of the AIDS epidemic, with a reference to the indifference of Nancy Reagan, who selected to give attention to the “conflict on medication” as an alternative of the looming AIDS disaster. The act opens with a pleasant rendition of “Falsettoland” led by Intrater and the whole firm. Marvin has new neighbors, Dr. Charlotte, finely acted by Valerie Nagel, and her lesbian girlfriend, Cordelia, convincingly performed by Cate Ginsberg.
The musical flows from music to music with little or no dialogue. I used to be undecided how I felt about this at first, however the storytelling drew me in. The costume items had been very properly matched to every character and the time interval by Costume Designer Kristina Martin. The set design by Elizabeth McFadden was consultant of New York Metropolis and actually labored for this manufacturing. The solid members had been properly suited to every of their roles, with stand-out performances from Ben Clark, Emma Hanks, and Darien Chen.
As director Kurt Boehm stated in his playbill director’s notice, Falsettos is “an essential piece of theatre because it represents the LGBTQ neighborhood, Judaism, popping out, and residing your life proudly with dignity and honor.”
