To the editor,

On Thursday evening, February 9, the Ipswich College Committee voted to just accept a 2023-2024 faculty funds proposed by the district administration that features chopping the only theatre arts college place within the Ipswich public colleges.

The price of this 0.5 full-time equal (FTE) place equals roughly 0.1% of the varsity district’s complete funds.

The stipend for the extracurricular drama applications – the center and highschool productions – stays intact for now, however this transfer to chop the theatre arts curriculum from the highschool is deeply regarding.

Beneath-enrollment has been said because the justification for the lower, when in comparison with common class dimension. Nonetheless, theatre arts is an elective class, and sometimes electives serve a comparatively small portion of the scholar inhabitants.

Small doesn’t imply unimportant or much less invaluable, nevertheless.

In actual fact, the scholars who prioritize theatre arts as their electives have a ardour for it that matches that of some other pursuit accessible at the highschool, together with sports activities, educational golf equipment, and music.

College students discover a dwelling within the theatre arts lessons, and these lessons have the ability to remodel college students’ self-confidence and social abilities, to say nothing of future office abilities: self-advocacy, promoting, presentation abilities, and for some, the muse for a profession as a paid actor.

Drama lessons are sometimes life-changing and life-affirming for youngsters fighting nervousness, loneliness, and psychological well being challenges.

Drama is a serious pillar of a high-quality arts training, and a college system like Ipswich that prides itself on the energy of its high-quality arts can’t afford to chop its drama curriculum, or the lifeline that it represents for our college students.

We ask for a revision of the funds to revive the school place for theatre arts.
